The name Haraf comes from the Somali word xaraf, which means “letter”. In Kiswahili, the related word herufi means “letter”. Since letters are the building blocks of words, and words are the building blocks of language, the name captures what Haraf.net is all about: learning language one letter, one word and one expression at a time.
Why Haraf.net?
Languages are more than grammar rules and vocabulary lists. They are part of how we communicate, learn, work, build relationships and understand different communities and cultures.
Somali, Kiswahili and English are particularly important across East Africa and beyond. Many people use two or even three of these languages in their everyday lives.
