Somali translation is more than replacing words
Consider this English sentence:

A translator should think about the intended meaning and natural Somali expression rather than translating each word mechanically.
This principle becomes increasingly important with:

1. Understand the entire sentence first
Before translating, ask:
- Who is doing the action?
- What happened?
- When did it happen?
- Why did it happen?
- What is the intended tone?
- Is the sentence formal or conversational?
2. Avoid word-for-word translation
English and Somali do not always organise information in the same way.
A literal translation can therefore sound unnatural even when every individual word is technically correct.
3. Translate the meaning
Idioms are a good example.
An English expression may have a cultural meaning that cannot be translated word for word.
Instead of translating each word, identify what the expression means and find an appropriate Somali expression where possible.
4. Pay attention to tense
Make sure the Somali translation communicates whether an action:
- Happened in the past

A formal English sentence should not automatically become highly conversational Somali.
Similarly, a friendly message does not always need unnecessarily formal Somali.
